A couple of weeks ago, while emptying the dishwasher together, my husband made the brilliant observation that if you start by putting away the silverware, (ours are in a basket attached to the door) then move to the bottom tray, then the top tray, you can keep all the dishes dry.
You see we have a lot of plastic cups in the top tray, and plastic tends to hold the water even through the dry cycle. So, if you don’t follow my husband’s suggestion and you start with the top tray first, then the bottom tray and then the silverware (which just happens to be exactly how I’ve been doing it for years…) the water shakes off and drips down and gets the bottom tray and the silverware all wet.
When my husband suggested this better way, I was completely sold! From now on I was committed to emptying the dishes in this new order. Well…friends…what do they say about old habits dying hard? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten down to the wet silverware and THEN it dawns on me…OH MAN! I did it the wrong way AGAIN!
Today was one of those days. Poor silverware. But I couldn’t help but wonder at this mindless habit of doing things the same way even though I had been taught a better way.
Then I started wondering, wow, what else could I be doing out of mindless habit when there is a better way?
A few things come to mind, but this is my prayer today…
Lord, show me a better way.
Because he created all, and knows all…and I’m pretty sure he looks at my worry, my fear, my distracted heart, my selfishness and my pride and he whispers…my child, there is a better way.
Teach me your way, O Lord,
that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
