One of the most important tips for when your spouse is out-of-town is this last one:
Ask for help.
Don’t be too shy or too proud, it is okay to need help! Whether you ask a family member to help you or you hire a sitter or you ask a friend to come by and be an extra set of hands, ask for help. There was one time I actually scheduled different people to come and help me with bedtimes while Derek was away on a trip. I knew that would be the time where everyone would need mommy and there simply wasn’t enough of me to go around.
I would urge you to ask for help when things are going well and anticipate that you might need help later. And most certainly ask for help when things aren’t going well. Always have someone you can call in a pinch when you need it.
If this is a struggle for you perhaps you can change your mindset. How many people are there in your life that you would drop everything and go help them if they called you? I’m sure you can think of plenty! Now, if one of those people confessed to you that they thought about calling you but they were too embarrassed and didn’t want to bother you…what would you say to them? YOU SHOULD HAVE CALLED ME! Am I right? Remember there are people who would love to help you out.
Don’t think of asking for help as a weakness…think of it as being smart.
Your turn –>What are some ways you’ve asked for help? When have you been the one happy to help someone who’s spouse is away?
